i'm unable to invest in characters who bear no meaning to me or the overall plot. do i find them sexy sometimes? sure, and there's nothing wrong with that. but you won't get me interested if there isn't actual purpose and weight.

while i am unable to create a character specifically for kink purposes, i integrate both into my characters with a heavy plot ratio. i can somewhat relate and everyone is allowed to do whatever makes them happy. this is just how i function.

every character listed here has a role in the story, no matter how small. i just haven't gotten to writing all of them down.

my characters may be nothing special, but they're special to me and make me happy. and that's all that matters. that should be the case for anyone.

i am deeply connected to these characters. while they exist as ways to tell the stories i want to tell, they mean everything to me. i love them very much.

they are people who helped me navigate my life, so the least i can do is tell their stories to the best extent i can.

the earth, covered in a thick sheet of permafrost, lay still as though dead. the world's best scientists had done everything they could in a vain effort to restore the sun. it has been this way for two centuries.

no one could have foreseen the sun itself being blotted out by inky darkness. everyone initially blamed the Acolytes, the ones who practiced the shadow modus, but was that really the case?

a woman by the name of Eternity knew better than this. shadow magic had nothing to do with the disappearance of the sun. while she mastered the temporal modus, her sister, Infinity, controlled space itself.

while everyone was busy blaming the Acolytes, Infinity worked in the background to fulfill her own goals. she worked with the moon itself, blotting out the sun with an unfathomably powerful spatial method was only the first step.

the Acolytes were simply a scapegoat, and were that way for the entirety of two centuries. they had no choice but to retreat underground. shortly afterwards, everyone followed them in order to escape the deathly cold of the surface.

Eternity did all she could to stop her sister, creating multiple time loops and parallel universes all in a desperate attempt to keep Infinity from snuffing out the sun. she didn't know why she was doing this, but nothing Eternity did mattered. she could never find a timeline where she successfully put an end to her plans.

a mad scramble ensued to find new sources of energy. it was only a decade or so later that geothermal harvesting was developed via a combination of fire and earth methods and replaced the usage of fossil fuels and burning trees, a quickly depleting resource.

this resulted in black snow. the soot as a result of lava harvesting turned the skies and surface black, but what other choice did humanity have?

for the first century and a half, this was how it was. the warmth of the earth's mantle was the only thing that stood between humanity and the cold embrace of death. many underground towns were built, if only to be closer to their precious source of life giving energy.

even after two hundred years, no one is sure why it all happened. Eternity didn't get any answers, and neither will anyone else for a long, long time.

the year was 153 AD (after darkness).

the moon broke a vow of silence that no one knew it had. it spoke to a priest one day and offered its help. it would offer salvation in exchange for worship and obedience.

at the mercy of this celestial object in the sky, they had no option but to accept. and so the Lunar Church was formed.

the lunar modus was "discovered" and technology was made to harness and control it. with this newfound tech, humans could finally return to the surface safely and rebuild society.

the year is now 221 AD. towns were rebuilt, humanity was getting back on its feet. it seemed that life was going to go on after all, but the Church has its own agenda.

a certain moonchild knows this better than anyone, and he will use it to change the world... at any cost.

Solar Modus

sometimes referred to as "light modus", magic using the stars. only referred to as solar modus because the only star closest enough to the earth was the sun... until that was blotted out. it was regarded as the most important modus on earth, since nothing can function without the sun itself, or so it was presumed.

as of now, no solar methods can be used without the sun itself.

Shadow Modus

using the power of the void, one can disappear into the shadows. one would believe that this modus uses nothingness, but dark matter is a very real thing. just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there. it's a very covert modus that seeps into one's mind and surfaces the darkest parts one wishes to keep concealed. if not controlled well, will control the user instead.

those who practice the shadow modus as a life style call themselves Acolytes of the Void. this is often shortened to Acolytes. they face much stigma being blamed for the "death" of the sun.

Lunar Modus

a once niche modus using the moon itself. unlike in our world, in Penumbra the moon emits its own light and energy... that's because it isn't merely just a celestial object. it's a celestial being inside a shell and it's trying to get out. humanity made a deal with it in exchange to be lended its powers. what does the moon want? it hasn't told us that, but perhaps Infinity would know.

the lunar modus is similar to the shadow modus in the way that it represents one's true emotions and intentions. the moon sees all, especially the things one desperately tries to hide. does that sound a little familiar to the above?

Penumbral Modus

a new modus created by Sébastien himself, combining traits of the lunar modus and the shadow modus. it isn't widely used, in fact the only users of this modus are him and his brother, Tes.

it really only exists to provide them a safe way to interact with each other without messing up each other's energies and potentially killing one another. kind of necessary when they are who they are, honestly.

Earth Modus

one would think that methods using this modus mostly utilizes soil, but this type also extends to flora, gemstones, and the dead. it is the most commonly used modus, as farming off of the earth was essential for survival.

as much as earth is associated with providing life, it also is death. for example, crematories used both earth and fire modi in order to ensure the dead received a proper send off to whence they came. they provided a faster way to return to star dust.

Fire Modus

often associated with destruction, fire magic is described as a dangerous modus when misused. despite this misconception, fire was the torch that led the way for humans. it was what kept them warm, cooked their food, protected them from predatory creatures. a new forest cannot grow until the previous one is burned to the ground.

change is not a bad thing - it opens new opportunities... but sometimes, change requires the destruction of the previous state of being in a great, fiery explosion. this modus is not for the cowardly, it requires a strong spirit to handle.

Water Modus

despite the belief that water modus only applies to h2o, it applies to anything in a liquid state. however, its most common application is using water - the most commonly used liquid chemical.

water is also the easiest liquid to manipulate. frozen liquids are possible to control but it's much more difficult, like trying to bend cold, stiff clay. it takes much more energy. liquids that turn into gasses are beyond the scope of the water modus and fall under the wind modus.

not necessarily the modus of life, as one would assume. it could very well be used to conjure the deadliest chemicals known on earth, as much as it can be used to cleanse and heal.

Wind Modus

often used for flight and flying machines. being able to control the atmosphere around oneself is a powerful skill to have. gasses are connected to liquids, which is why most water technicians also use wind and vice versa.

however, gasses are very difficult to control. gas particles are extremely fast moving and spread apart, so there's a lot to account for when manipulating the atmosphere itself. one mistake in the equation will cause disaster, much like a flap of a butterfly's wings causing a hurricane on the other side of the world.

if fully mastered, one can control the weather itself. this takes many years if not decades of practice and study, however.

Spatial Modus

the modus that bends the very fabric of space itself. one can use this modus to teleport absolutely anywhere they please, and that's the most simple method in this category.

are you wondering how the sun was blotted out? fun fact: if the sun was a black hole with the same exact mass, nothing would change other than light wouldn't reach earth. it was manipulated with spatial magic to have infinite density to create a singularity. so yeah, the sun imploded.

you would think that creating black holes would be an earth modus sort of thing, but good luck using only earth methods to compress the earth into an infinitesimally small point. you better start picking up on physics and quantum physics if you want to come anywhere close to understanding this modus.

Temporal Modus

the modus of time itself. time does not flow one way, it only does to us humans. it in fact, can flow backwards, up, down, or even transcend into a different state.

if one thinks stopping time is impressive, they would be disappointed to know that is the most simple method the temporal modus can offer. try creating an entirely different timeline, then we'll talk. just try to not create too many time loops. you can potentially trap yourself in a never ending loop if you mess up your method formula that badly to the point you need someone else to help you out.

contrary to popular belief, temporal magic cannot predict the future. in quantum physics, once something is perceived it is altered. there is no way to be able to know your future until it happens... at least not on this dimensional plane.

Demonic Modus

if you were expecting to hear "this is the evil modus", you are wrong. this is the modus of the flesh and body. it doesn't necessarily mean stuff like voodoo or blood magic, but it can definitely be that. if you've read to this point, you already know that every modus can be used in a positive or negative manner.

methods in the demonic modus can be used to regenerate limbs, create new ones, develop advanced surgery techniques, or help transgender individuals transition physical. or one can use it for sexual enhancement. though, it's mostly known for the latter, which gives it a "bad" reputation.

this stigma is utter bullshit because sexuality is perfectly normal.

Angelic Modus

the modus of the mind and spirit, not the "pure and good modus that cleanses all". could also be referred to as the "psychic modus". the ability to project and inject from the mind falls under this category of modus.

a sapient being cannot function fully without a soul, and this is where angelic modus and demonic modus work together to create a being that can think for itself... but angelic magic can do the exact opposite.
