Personality

Desmond dedicates his life to serving his loved ones to the point of over exertion. it's very hard to get this man to think of himself, and that's not a boast of altruism or anything.

no, Desmond is this way because the mentality was beaten into him, literally. he's loving, caring, will put the people he loves before him because he wants to see them smile, but neglects himself in very self destructive ways. it's actually very exhausting to get him to care about his mental health.

everyone has a limit, though. he's reached it quite a few times. just don't abuse his selflessness. he's way too tired to put up with that nowadays.

forgiving and way too patient. he has never once considered revenge or hurting another person out of malice. he just can't do it. we're all the same in our different ways, why fight?

Biography

Desmond grew up alongside his twin brother, Daniel, and a very homophobic, conservative father. their mother was absent for most of his life as she realized how much of an asshole her husband was and left him. unfortunately, the kids did not come with her due to the custody laws favoring the man at the time, otherwise things could have been better.

she remained sort of a positive force when Des and Daniel received mails from her, for a while at least. their father was not happy with this and moved houses so she wouldn't have any contact with her kids. couldn't have someone telling his kids they were people, after all.

the only positive parental presence Desmond and Daniel at at this point was Joshua, Tes and Sébastien's biological father. Joshua was a private investigator who would allow Desmond and Daniel to visit and stay in his office whenever they needed a break from their abusive home. Joshua planned to help Desmond and Daniel after seeing bruises on them, but he never got around to it, as Joshua was assassinated during a hit made by his wife when the kids were eleven years old.

as they grew up, Desmond took many beatings and verbal abuse in Daniel's place. he would do anything to protect his twin brother, all the bloody noses and black eyes wouldn't matter as long as his baby brother was safe. Daniel would never survive those beatings, as sensitive as he is.

Desmond took on all the responsibilities and expectations in the house so Daniel didn't have to. he was to be the prodigy his father wanted, the ideal man. but all that became too much for him on several occasions where he tried to end himself a couple of times.

this unfortunately turned co-dependent as Desmond neglected himself for the sake of Daniel's wellbeing. the latter was uncomfortable with it, and thus Daniel spiraled into self guilt, wishing he wouldn't be so weak so Desmond wouldn't have to take flak for him.

QUEER ANGST ARC

his childhood best friend, Sébastien, was the one who helped him realize his homosexuality through the power of cheesy yaoi fanfics. there were several times where Desmond had to deal with beatings when his father found out he was gay and was seeing another man.

it was around his late teens where his father tried to steer him away from his queerness by forcing him to meet a girl in an arranged marriage he thought would be a nice match for him. her name was Helena and she was just as queer as he was. the irony was that they were both in a environment where it wasn't safe for them to admit they were just entirely gay.

they basically confided with each other and admitted they had no interest in the opposite gender. once they found out they were in the same boat, they stayed friends but no further than that.

Desmond was pretty much the slave and punching bag around the house to his father up until his early twenties, where he finally got the stability to move out and take Daniel along with him.

eventually when gay marriage was made legal by Sébastien (who was now Archbishop), Desmond married his highschool crush, Ley, after a long, winded struggle with his mental health and situations they could not control. he and his husband are doing quite well, they even have an adopted kid.

oh, and his dad? he's rotting in the dirt where he belongs. Sébastien might've had something to do with it.

somewhere around high school years, he was the sole survivor of a car crash that resulted in him being afflicted with total achromatopsia (complete colorblindness) and put in a several week coma.

he was the designated driver and dozed off at the wheel due to his narcolepsy and swerved to avoid a deer. the car totaled and all three of his friends died in the accident. he has not forgiven himself and refuses to drive now unless absolutely necessary. he doesn't want to get anyone else killed.

there was also a little high school drama subplot where Desmond's father found out about his homosexuality through a vindictive bully by the name of Randall William.

long story short, Randall bullied the shit out of Ley (whom was Desmond's crush at the time), and Desmond was not having that so he punched Randall in the face. as a response to this humiliation, Randall let it loose that Desmond was seeing Ley romantically, then Desmond's dad beat his son's face in when he found out.

what happened then? well, Desmond's friends and brother were not happy. Helena clobbered Randall out of sheer rage - Randall couldn't tell anyone because he was too afraid to admit he got beat up by a girl. then Sebastien stalked and blackmailed Randall into adulthood, and would have buried him if Desmond hadn't stopped him.

so yeah, Desmond has pretty aggressive friends, despite he himself being docile to hell and back. for the record, no; Desmond did not and does not get off on the idea of revenge. Helena and Sebastien are naturally very angry and justice oriented people.

despite this, Desmond and Randall have made up. the two have admitted they were troubled teenagers and have moved on with good terms. people grow up and admit their mistakes. it's normal.
